What’s Included in a “Healthy Diet”?

A healthy diet is high in fruits and vegetables (dark leafy greens, carrots, berries, apples, etc.), lean protein (like fish, poultry, and legumes), low-fat dairy (including 1% or skim milk and yogurt), and whole grains (such as whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, and more).

Here are some essential micronutrients that should be included in a healthy diet:

  • Protein — Eggs, soy, and nuts are also good sources of protein in addition to the ones listed above.
  • Carbohydrates — Whole grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits all include necessary carbohydrates.
  • Fats — Foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and unsaturated fats are the healthy fats your body wants. You can find these healthy fats in avocado, flaxseed, and coconut oil.
  • Vitamins — There are 13 vitamins that your body needs to stay healthy and fight off disease, including vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and biotin.
  • Minerals — Similar to vitamins, our body needs minerals to function and regulate our metabolism. Minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium are examples of essential minerals.

Eating foods that contain our macro and micronutrients will assist in maintaining a healthy diet. Even more,  a healthy diet is also about balancing those nutrients to make sure you’re eating the right amounts of each. As for macronutrients, the amount you must eat will highly depend on your health goals. But here are the recommended macros for the for the standard adult:

  • Carbohydrates: 45% to 60% of daily food intake
  • Fats: 20% to 35% of daily food intake
  • Protein: Remainder of daily food intake

How Much Water Should I Drink?

Nutrition experts have concluded that at least half a gallon of water, or 64 ounces, is sufficient; however, your water intake will most likely depend on your lifestyle and medical conditions. If you want to accurately define how much water you should drink in a day, you can use an online water intake calculator.

Is There a Right and Wrong Time to Eat?

There is a lot of debate around what time of the day you should and should not eat. Research shows the best way to maintain your health goals is to eat breakfast, a hearty lunch, and a light dinner. As for the time of day, the answer is clear: Eat when you’re hungry. Your body will tell you when it needs food — and when it doesn’t.  Research shows a late dinner now and then is fine, but it’s best practice to eat earlier in the evening since your body is most insulin-resistant later in the day.

How Can I Create My Own Health and Nutrition Plan?

Every health and wellness plan should be tailored to each individual and their health goals. For example, if you’re looking to build muscle, you’ll need to eat more than someone trying to lose weight.

One of the most efficient ways to start eating healthier is to add good foods to your nutrition plan rather than cutting everything out. Start with eating more fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens, and substituting fatty meats for something leaner, like poultry, fish, or a plant-based protein option. You can also add vitamins and minerals into your diet by taking supplements if you feel like your current diet does not provide enough for your body.
