Caring Hands Spotlight: Celebrating the start of a New Kyäni Caring Hands Project in the community of Maztam in Chiapa, Mexico!

The Caring Hands Mission focuses on Kyäni’s commitment to making a difference: to bring hope to children in need by improving access to nutrition, sanitation, and education. From its beginnings in 2010, Caring Hands has worked to offer hope to those who have none, and to improve the lives of others throughout the world.

Just a few weeks ago, our executives celebrated virtually with the local community of Maztam in Chiapa, Mexico as we announced the start of an exciting, new Kyani Caring Hands project and honored the memory of our founders, Kirk and Jim Hansen.

Mr. Carl Taylor and his wife Linda Taylor, along with LeAnn Hansen, Rebecca Hansen and Andrew Mangeris, all joined together on September 21 to celebrate the kickoff of this new project.

It was announced that Kyäni Caring Hands will begin construction of a new building as part of the local high school. Prior to Caring Hands, the town of Maztam did not have a high school for local students to attend, so this new building will provide the opportunity for more students to continue their education.

The new building will feature new classrooms, bathrooms, and a kitchen to be able to offer Potato Pak meals to students in need of breakfast and lunch.

The event was also attended by the General Director of COBACH, Nancy Hernández Reyes, and mayors of Larrainzar, Tenejapa and Mitontic municipalities.

Nancy Hernández Reyes gave her inaugural speech of the semester, welcoming more than 100,000 students who study in the 338 schools located in Chiapas, and recognized and thanked Kyäni Caring Hands for the work we have been doing in Chiapas for the last six years.

Following the announcements, they also revealed a heart-warming mural, painted in honor and memory of our Kyäni founders in the community of Pocolum, Chiapas.

The mural has been titled “Koltael”, meaning “to help and liberate” in the local Mayan languages of Tsotsil and Tseltal.

Mural by Luis Herrera and his students from the COBACH 197 Sibanilja Pocolum School. September 2020.

The mural features several Mayan elements including the Mayan snail: symbolizing the harmony of community life, and the Mayan stelae and codices: used since ancient times to narrate the important events of the great kings, to date the victorious battles, and to leave a written and carved record of their great advance in different areas.

At the center of the mural are the faces of Kirk Hansen, Jim Hansen and Carl Taylor, thanking them for “recognizing, valuing, and respecting the cultural greatness of the indigenous people, and who have have used their resources, talents and ideals, to unite efforts with COBACH and UNACH, to establish an alliance that has resulted in access to cutting-edge education for children in need.”

We are so grateful and honored to have the loving memory of Kirk and Jim represented so beautifully in the local community of Pocolum.

Thank you to all of our Business Partners, Customers, and Employees for the role they continue to play in the Caring Hands journey. We truly are Rising Together!
