These 5 Foods Can Make You Feel Sluggish

Do you ever feel like you got a great night’s sleep, but yet you feel sluggish or crash halfway through the day? It might be due to your diet.

While there are many factors that can make a person tired, such as a lack of sleep, dehydration, or other underlying causes, your diet can play a significant role in how well your brain and body perform throughout the day.

Keep your energy up by fueling your body with healthy foods and staying clear of the ones that make you feel sluggish. Here are five foods to avoid:

Heavily Processed Foods

Heavily processed foods, such as chips and frozen foods, contain insufficient amounts of nutrition benefits for the calorie ratio. Not to mention when eating foods like chips, it is easy to lose track of how many we’ve eaten, making it easy to go back for more. Processed foods have sugars and carbs that will cause a temporary spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels, but that energy spike won’t last for long. You may notice a momentary boost of energy, but it will quickly be followed by an energy crash.

White Bread and Other Refined Carbs

Indulging in refined carbs like bread and pasta now and then is acceptable for your body, but it is best to try to avoid them if you notice that they are making you feel sluggish. According to Healthline, “refined carbs have been stripped of almost all fiber, vitamins, and minerals. For this reason, they can be considered as ‘empty calories.’” Like heavily processed foods, refined carbs have a high glycemic index and added sugars that can make us feel a small spike in energy but an even harder crash.

Keep in mind not all carbs are bad carbs or refined carbs. Whole carb foods made with proteins and fiber are healthy and even necessary for your diet. Choose whole grains like whole-wheat bread and pasta. For snacks, opt for popcorn or nuts rather than something high in refined carbs and added sugars.

Baked Goods and Foods High in Sugar

High-sugar foods like pastries, candy, and sugary drinks all cause that “sugar crash” feeling. Like the other foods listed above, foods high in sugar cause a quick but unsustainable spike in blood sugar. Once your blood sugar goes up, it must come back down, and when it does, you’ll feel like you’ve hit a wall.

If you’re craving sweets, opt for healthier options like fruits, which have natural sugars that will sustain your blood sugar and insulin levels for longer.
